Abstract

398,673. Diaphragms for pressure electrolyzers. MENTZEL, A., 2, Nordsternstrasse, Sch÷neberg, Berlin. Nov. 11, 1932, No. 31949. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41.] In cells for electrolysis under high pressure, the diaphragms employed are of asbestos board or paper or of materials having a similar degree of uniform fine porosity as distinguished from asbestos fabrics having larger scale apertures. A porosity of 30 per cent is suitable. Asbestos boards made from long-fibred asbestos free from impurities such as metallic oxides are preferred ; binding agents not attacked by the electrolyte or by generated gases are employed in their manufacture; solutions of ethyl or benzyl cellulose in benzene are suitable. The proportion of binding agent should be insufficient to close the natural pores of .the asbestos. A diaphragm may be inserted under pressure between permeable metal carriers which may constitute electrodes. The structure is mounted in grooves in insulating frames. Specification 372,451 is referred to.
