Abstract
754,641. Furnace electrode holder. ELEKTROKEMISK AKTIESELSKAP. Dec. 3, 1954 [Dec. 5, 1953], No. 35010/54. Class 39(3). In an electrode holder for an electric furnace, several contact clamps 2 spaced round the electrode are encircled by a pressure ring 4 and are pressed in to grip the electrode by one or more elastic membranes 5 sealed at their edges to the pressure ring 4 and pressed in against the contacts 2 by fluid pressure on their outer surfaces. Water is supplied to the ring 4 by a pipe 7 and a pressure of up to 100 lbs. per sq. in. is controlled by a valve in the water discharge pipe 8. The ring 4 preferably has an inner wall 9 with perforations 10 allowing water pressure in the ring to be transmitted to each membrane ; or the wall 9 may be imperforate, in which case separate supplies of water are fed to cool the ring 4 and to the spaces 6 between the wall 9 and membranes 5. The pressure ring 4 may be in three parts permanently hinged together.
