Abstract
542,014. Centrifugal separators. HARWOOD, F. (Watson, C. F. K.). June 19, 1940, No. 10592. [Class 23] A centrifugal machine for separating sludge from liquid, especially for use in the treatment of sewage, has a rotor B mounted within a casing A, and a turbine attachment to the rotor so that some of the rotational energy of the clarified liquid is regained and imparted to the rotor. The rotor is driven by the motor E and has radial blades C which just clear the inner surface of the casing wall. The separator has three effective zones ; the lowest or inlet zone A<SP>1</SP> where the blades C have a curved part H with a sharp edge to effect pumping and disintegration, the intermediate zone where the blades are straight and separation is effected while matter is crushed between the blades and the casing wall, and a third zone at the top where the blades C have curved parts L which act as turbine blades. These curved parts L may be shrouded and additional turbine blades M may be added. The sludge is discharged at the top of the intermediate zone through a circumferential slit B<SP>1</SP> and a volute J; the slit is kept clear by a radial knife attached to the rotor. The clean liquid is discharged through the volute K.
