[Class 98 (i)] In a roll-film camera, a shutter-setting and a film winding shaft are simultaneously operated by a winding handle until the shutter is set, whereupon the shutter-setting shaft is latched against further movement and the film-winding shaft is disconnected from it until completion of the film-winding operation, when a film-measuring device causes the two shafts to be again connected; so locking the film-winding shaft. As shown, a sleeve shaft 22 carrying a key 24 engaging teeth on the end of the film take-up spool is rotated to wind the film through gears (not shown) operated by a handle on the back of the camera, as described in Specification 513,738. A pinion 23 on the shaft 22 drives a mutilated gear 28 which rotates a pinion 27 carried by a shaft 72 keyed to a shaft 67, one revolution of which winds a focal-plane shutter (not shown) of the kind described in Specification 532,852. The shutter mechanism then latches the shaft 67, and at the same time the shafts 22, 72 are disconnected owing to the mutilated portions 30 of the gear 28 arriving opposite the pinions 23, 27. The gear 28 is latched in this inoperative position by a pawl 35 carried by a hollow shaft 19 which engages the end of one of the toothed sections and holds it against the action of a spring 32 which bears on a pin 31 on the gear and tends to rotate it so that the toothed sections may again engage the pinions 23, 27. Winding of the film is then continued until a tooth 44 carried by a lever 40 pivoted at 41 engages an aperture A in the film. Slight further movement of the film then causes it to swing the lever 40 to the left, the tooth being then disengaged from the aperture in the film by a cam surface 80 moving over a fixed projection 81. A flange 39 on this lever engages between the arms of a yoke 37 carried by the shaft 19, which is thus rocked by the movement of the lever to disengage the pawl 35 which it carries from the gear 28. The spring 32 then rotates this gear until the toothed portions again engage the pinions 23, 27 thus re-connecting the shafts 22, 72 and preventing further winding of the film, owing to the shaft 72 being locked by the shutter mechanism, until the shutter is released.
