[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 6, 1939.] [Class 98 (i)] A focal-plane photographic shutter comprises a pair of curtains which are wound under tension on to a roller, and means to prevent unwinding of the curtains during this operation, is provided with means to prevent release of the shutter except when fully wound comprising a latch for one of the curtains which, when the shutter is fully wound, is operatively engaged by the shutter release member, but in any intermediate position, is out of the path of the release member. The invention is described in connection with the shutter described in Specification 520,957, in which a shaft 56 has loosely mounted on it a gear 63 carrying a pivoted pawl 60 which engages a single-tooth ratchet 58 on the shaft. During winding. of the shutter the shaft 56 is rotated through one revolution, the pawl 60 engaging the ratchet 58 so that the gear 63 is also turned and rotates the shutter roller through intermediate gears. Operation of the shutter release causes a lever 72 to move clockwise about its pivot 73 so that a lug 82 on it engages the end of the pawl 60 and releases the pawl from the ratchet 58, allowing the gear 63 to turn under the pull of the shutter curtain. Only when the shutter is fully wound can this release action occur, since at intermediate stages of the winding the gear 63 carries the pawl out of the path of the lug 82.
