541,449. Feed-water regulators. ARMSTRONG, C. H., BROWN, N. H., and COPES REGULATORS, Ltd. May 20, 1940, No. 8959. [Class 135] An apparatus for controlling the supply of feed water to steam boilers in which the main feed valve is actuated by differential pressure has one of the actuating pressures variable by a control valve actuated by means responsive to the water level and the load on the generator. In the form shown in the Figure, the main feed valve 8 is formed integrally with a plunger 12 subject to feed pressure admitted through a passage 17 throttled by a needle valve 18 and with a leaky piston 10 subject on one side to boiler pressure and on the other to a variable pressure controlled by a needle valve 14 cooperating with a seat removably secured to the plunger. The valve 14 is actuated by a floating lever 16 one end of which is pivoted to a float-actuated lever turning on a fixed pivot 23 while the other end is coupled to a lever 25 turning on a pivot 26 and connected by a link 27 to a bellows 28. The bellows, which is adjustably loaded by a spring 31, has its open end secured to an annular plate while its closed end is guided by a spider 29, collapse of the bellows being limited by a stop 32. The outside of the bellows is subject to the pressure in the float chamber 3 which is connected to the generator by pipes 4, 5, while the outside of the bellows is subject to the pressure in the steam main on the discharge side of a superheater so that the presdifferential gives a measure of the steam flow. In a modification the float lever is pivoted on a link joined to the lever 26 and is linked directly to the pilot valve spindle. In a further modification the pilot valve spindle is connected by a link and lever to the midpoint of a floating lever one end of which is coupled by a link including a compression relief spring to a lever connected to a spring-loaded diaphragm subject to superheater inlet and discharge pressures. The other end of the floating lever is coupled by a link including a tension relief spring to one end of a spring-loaded bell-crank lever actuated by an inclined expanding tube connected by piping at both its free and anchored end to the generator.
