Abstract

541,363. Blasting fuzes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Ensign-Bickford Co.). May 10, 1940, No. 8457. [Class 9 (i)] A flexible cord-like ignition device comprises a readily combustible core made from a number of yarns 10 each coated with deflagrating powder 11 confined by a tape 13 of less combustible material spirally wound so as to leave a relatively narrow spiral flame escape area 13<SP>1</SP> running along the cord and a coating 16 of moisture-proof material destructible by the hot combustion gases. A light countering of textile yarns 15 is preferably provided to hold the tape 13 in place. The coating 11 may consist of mealed black powder with a nitrocellulose binder, the coating 16 of nitrocellulose and the tape 13 of paper or cloth. The device may be used in blasting for exploding a number of distant charges practically simultaneously or at predetermined time intervals by attaching appropriate lengths of safety fuse connected to the charges, at different points of the device.
