Abstract

541,196. Making rubber moulds. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Oct. 15, 1940, No. 15268. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1939. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Metal moulds are formed by electro-deposition on patterns of rubber or like composition formed from the original mould. The pattern on being vulcanized in the original mould shrinks to some extent; this shrinkage is made up by treatment with molten paraffin wax or other agent which swells the rubber to the original size, after which the new mould 8 is formed on the pattern by electro-deposition. The pattern shown, which is for moulding pneumatic tyres, comprises a layer 5 of rubber disposed over a core 4 attached to a plate 3. The process may be employed for the production of moulds of greater size than the original by over-swelling the vulcanized patterns and employing them to produce moulds from which other patterns are formed, and so forth.
