Abstract

541,039. Abrasive material. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Feb. 7, 1940, Nos. 2382 and 2383. Convention dates, Feb. 11, 1939, and Jan. 24, 1940. [Classes 22 and 70] An abrasive material suitable for polishing glass is made by calcining an alumina-silica base material such as kaolin to a temperature below fusion, but not less than 1010‹ C. until recrystallization has progressed sufficiently to form microscopic mullite crystals embedded in a matrix and reducing the calcined material to a finely divided condition. Lime or plaster of Paris may be added as a fluxing material capable of lowering the mullite crystallization temperature, and also to absorb impurities, but these may be replaced by borax, bottle glass, feldspar, lead oxide or sodium carbonate. An example is given in which a mixture of kaolin, plaster of Paris and wood sawdust is moulded and heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere and finally in an oxidizing atmosphere to about 1290‹ C.
