Abstract
507,823. Enamels and glazes; glass manufacture. AUERGES. AKT.-GES. Sept. 6, 1938, No. 26095. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1937. [Class 56] Relates to silicate melts, such as glasses, glazes, or enamels, which are opacified by zirconium oxide and are subjected to prolonged heat treatment during manufacture. According to the invention, the composition of the melt is so selected that the zirconium oxide is not absorbed, or does not form double compounds with constituents of the melt, under the prolonged heating. In particular, with aluminous silicate melts, the proportions of silica and alumina should not exceed seven to one. The zirconium oxide can be pro-' duced during fusion from double compounds which yield the oxide under heat, for example, sodium-zirconium silicate or lead zirconate. The materials of the melt may be fused with an excess of zirconium oxide, and the resulting product pulverized when cold and added to a melt of different composition to secure the desired final product.
