Abstract

263,410. Haddan, R., (Corning Glass Works). July 1,1926. Production of metal.-A method of producing glass which, in plates of 4 m.m. thickness, is transparent to ultra-violet rays, consists in reducing the quantity of iron impurities present in the raw material, preferably to less than 0.55 per cent, and in melting such material under non-oxidizing conditions. The quantity of titanium impurities is also reduced by subjecting the material, before its final setting, to reducing conditions. In making a calcium phosphate glass, the raw material is melted with a reducing- agent, preferably sugar or powdered carborundum, in a crucible composed of a material substantially free from oxides of iron and titanium. Coloured glasses may be obtained by adding the oxides of cobalt, chromium, uranium, vanadium, or nickel. Fused quartz of which the ultra-violet transmission will not change appreciably during use may be produced by fusing silica in which the iron and titanium content has been reduced to a minimum.
