Abstract

540,964. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. March 12, 1941, No. 3388. Convention date, April 2, 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] Relates to means for and a method of feeding bare or covered rubber thread to a rib knitting- machine and knitting it under uniform stretch. The mechanism first removes all tension from the rubber thread and then presents it in an unstretched condition to a positive feeding means which stretches it uniformly. The thread R is pulled off a supply 100 by a yarn furnisher consisting of a small electric motor 110 geared to two yarn advancing spindles 115, 116 with circumferential grooves 119. The rubber thread is wrapped around the spindles in loops, embracing both spindles and progresses from one groove to another towards the free ends of the spindles, where it drops off. This process slightly kinks the thread R, which is straightened by a feeler arm 120 forming part of a multipoint mercury switch 125. The contacts are so located that as the feeler arm moves, the number of points in contact with the mercury is varied to control the speed of the motor 110. From the eye 130 in the end of the arm 120 the thread R passes to a feeding device consisting of a cone 140 positively driven from the dial driving gear 36 through gears 146, 147. The gearing relation is such that the linear speed of the thread passing between the cone 140 and its associated pressure roll 141 is less than the amount drawn by the needles, which results in the thread being uniformly stretched. A cam 139 is used to put pressure on the fabric opposite the knocking-over point to pull the rubber stitches away from the needles.
