A changing device for displaying wall-papers, carpets, fabrics &c. comprises a frame-work 10, 11 around which hanging sheets of the material, are caused to travel in a closed path. The sheets 16 hang from rods 17 furnished with end rollers which ride between two pairs of oppositely disposed rails 14, 15 which are inclined so that the rods tend to fall towards the front. The foremost sheet 16 is displayed, preferably at the window of a casing, and is adapted to be lifted by two parallel endless chains 20 passing round sprockets 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, of which the sprockets 21 are mounted on a powerdriven shaft 22 to ensure equal motion of the two chains. The foremost rod 17 is held up by a nose 19<SP>1</SP> on a pivoted catch 19, and is released to fall forward into curved guides 15<SP>1</SP> when the catch 19 is depressed about its pivot 33, a pin 31 forcing round one leg of a spring 30 during this action to raise the other leg into obstructive position to detain the following rod 17. Alternatively a knife held above the catch 19 can descend therewith to cut off the following rod from advancing beyond a notch 32 in each of the upper rails 14. One or more sets of oppositely directed hooks 27, 28 carried by the chains 20 effect the transfer, the forward hooks 27 striking a plate 29 on the catches 19 to lower same and the hooks 28 taking under the released rod 17 and lifting it past sprockets 23, 24, when the rod drops from hooks 28 to hooks 27 and is lowered by them to the rear of the inclined stack of rods and pendant sheets. Stationary guides 34, 35, 36, which may converge, centralize the rods so that they land with their rollers on the rear extensions of the bottom rails 15. The sheets have stiff cross-bars attached to their upper edges to receive hooks by which they are slung from the rods 17.
