Abstract

385,193. Endless-chain conveyers. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, London.-(Sheridan Co., T. W. & C. B. ; 135, Lafayette Street, New York, U.S.A.) May 10, 1932, No. 13496. [Class 78 (i).] In a bookbinding process the books are carried from one machine to another in clamps 31 which travel in a closed orbit in fixed upper and lower guide rails 30. Each clamp 31 may comprise a fixed inner member 32 and a movable outer member 33 which is guided for movement against spring- action on rods 34. Hinge-studs arranged between the clamps engage and travel in the guide rails 30. The books travel intermittently, stopping at each machine, and each clamp is opened at 38 at the delivery point and closed at the in-feed point 39. The clamp train is power-driven from a main shaft 44 through a large sprocket-wheel 42 and a mechanism 43 of the Geneva-motion type. The in-feed mechanism for feeding the books to the clamp-train is of the chain-conveyer type comprising side bars 58, running along the level from in-feed tables 54, 55 adapted to be used for hand-feeding, followed by similar inclined side bars 59, hinged at 60, extending to the in-feed point. Supported above each of the side bars 58 are side-plates 62, and similar plates 63 are attached to the bars 59, the outer plates being adjustable to suit the width of the books. The outer plates 63 can be swung outwardly about hinges 64 in case of displacement, congestion, &c. of books in the shoot. The books are supported on adjustable bottom guides and fed along the shoot preferably by two endless sprocket-chains 75, connected together by cross pins spaced to conform with the spacing of the book clamps, so that each pin may force a book into the proper clamp. The pair of chains are driven from a countershaft 85 receiving motion from the main shaft 44. The bottom adjustable guide in the inclined portion of the shoot is connected at its upper end by a link 87 with a flat receiving-plate 88 upon which each book levels itself when carried forwardly from the in-feed chain by the rear rod of a clamp. The plate 88 is supported above a bracket 90 on the side bars 59. The inclined part of the shoot is supported on toggles 91, 92 so that it may be dropped bodily about the pivot 60 to give access in case of jamming &c. Each clamp in the train is closed upon its book B when the latter is resting on the plate 88 and wholly engaged by a book reshaping device 95. The reshaping device 95 acts progressively upon the advancing book between two stopping positions and before the book is clamped.
