9 Claims.
This invention relates to an advertising display device and has for its principal object the provision of a highly efiicient mechanism which will successively display a series of advertising cards to produce a continuously changing display of advertisements, and which can be operated either by hand or by means of an electric motor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a motor operated device which cannot damage the cards or displays even though the machine may become clogged. r
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efliciency.
These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings-which form a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawings and throughout the description.
In the drawings: I
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved advertising display device enclosed in a suitable ornamental housing. r
Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough, taken on the line 22, Fig.1.
Fig. 3 is a front view of a motor operated operating mechanism with the enclosing housing removed.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a hand operated form of the invention.
Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, are diagrammatic views illustrating the operation of the card changing mechanism.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 99, Fig.4.
Fig. 10 is a detail section through the card changing mechanism, taken on the line l6l6, Fig. 7. s
The operating mechanism is supported from a base plate In upon a vertical post I I and a vertical guide I2. A pack of cards, illustrated at [3, car- 45 rying the advertising to be displayed, is carried in an inclined card holder I 4 supported from the base plate upon suitable pedestals l5. A glass plate 33 covers thefront of the card holder.
The device operates to continuously lift the lower or rearmost card of the pack anddeposit the same on the front of the pack. i
The changing of the cards is accomplished by means of a tubular slide I6 which rides vertically on the guide l2. The slide member 5 is lifted by means of a cross head I! also slidably mounted on the guide member l2. The cross head may be lifted either by hand or by a motor driven mechanism. For hand operation, a hand lever I8 is pivoted, as shown at [9 between the pedestals l5 and extends rearwardly through the guide I2 beneath the cross head l'l. Thus, when the forward extremity of the lever is depressed, the rearward extremity thereof will act to lift the cross head and the tubular slide" l 6.
As the slide rises, the rearmost card of the pack is pushed upwardly by frictionalengagement with the edge of a rubber pushing block 22 which is supported from the tubular slide upon suitable leaf springs 23. A gripping plate 24, pivotally mounted upon a hinge clip 25 extending from the slide I6, carries an L-shaped weight 26 which bears on the cards ahead of the rearmost card to prevent the former from moving upwardly with the latter, as shown in Fig. 5. After the rearmost card has been pushed upwardly from the pack, the weight 26 will swing downwardly against the front thereof and the springs 23 will cause the block 22 to clamp the card thereagainst, as shown in Fig. 6. The slide continues to rise carrying the card with it until the card is clear of the pack, as shown in Fig. 7. On its way upward the gripping plate snaps beneath a ratchet extremity 21 on a releasing spring 28, as shownin Fig. 7.
. The slide l6 now moves downwardly, as shown in Fig. 8, causing the gripping plate 24 to strike the ex'tremity2l of the releasing spring 28. As the slide continues, downward the gripping plate is held so that the card is released and forced forward by the springs 23 to drop onto the front of e the pack, as shown in Fig. 8. As the slide I6 continues downward, the gripping plate 24 snaps from position in the'ratchet extremity 21 and again drops down on the top of the pack of cards, as shown in Fig. 5, to repeat the cycle of operation. The gripping plate carries a rubber contact cushion 42 to cushion its contact with the releasing spring 28.
Means are provided to adjust the device for various cardthicknesses, and it can also be adjusted to pick up one or more cards, by means of an adjustable backing plate 29 which is supported on adjusting screws 30, from the back of the card holder l4. By adjusting the screws 30, the position of the rearmost card in relation to the. lifting mechanism can be varied. The releasing spring 28 is suspended from a top frame member 3| having sockets 32 for receiving the upper extremities of the members II and I2.
Thus, it can be readily seen that if the slide .Worm wheel 31.
member 1 6 moves upwardly, it will first cause the block 22 to push the rearmost card above the other cards then the gripping lever 24 will swing downward to bring the weight 25 against the card to hold it against the block 22. As soon as the lower extremity of the lifted card passes above the pack of cards, it will snap forward to the position of Fig. 7 at which time the slide member will start downwardly. The first movement will release the weight 26 allowing the card to fall to the front of the pack.
In the motor driven form of the device, a connecting rod 34 is connected at its lower extremity with a pin 35 secured to the cross head 11. The upper extremity of the connecting rod is hingedly mounted on a crank pin 35 extending from a The Worm wheel 31 is journalled on a suitable axle member 38 on the re'ar'frame member II and is rotated from an electric motor 39 through the medium of a suitable transmission worm 4i).
It is desired to call attention to the fact that the downward movement of the slide member l6 and its associated mechanism is accomplished by gravity only. There is no positive push from the motor itself. Thus if any of the cards become caught above the pack, they will not be crushed since they simply act to support the slide member while the motor carries the cross head ll downwardly under power.
The entire mechanism may be enclosed in a suitable ornamental housing 4 I.
The extreme outward position of the block 22 is limited by meansof tie members 2 I. The down-, ward movement of the gripping plate is likewise limited by rneans of a stop bar 20 which contacts the back of the slide [6.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
