Abstract

540,432. Gravity - separation apparatus. HARTLEY, C. J. Aug. 21, 1940, No. 13261. [Class 111] In a settling-tank, which has two central vertical shafts, one 11 hollow and supporting sludge scrapers 13 and the other 16 passing through the shaft 11 and carrying a vane 34 for stirring the sludge above the sludge outlet, the hollow shaft 11 is carried and driven by a crown wheel 10 supported on a cross-bridge 15 and the inner shaft 16 passes through the crown wheel and is slung from an end-thrust bearing 17 also carried by the cross-bridge. As shown the shaft 16 is driven by bevel gearing 19, and a chain 23 from an electric motor 24, which also drives a worm in gear with the crown wheel 10. The crown wheel may be supported on rollers 27 mounted on the bridge 15 or by means of a ball race arranged between a grooved ring on the bridge 15 and a similar ring on the crown wheel. A steadying bearing 29 may be provided for the shaft 11 below the bridge 15. The shaft 16 has bushed or radial ball bearings above the crown wheel, a bearing 30 at the lower end of the shaft 11 and a bearing 31 on a support 32 which crosses the sump 33 in which the vane 34 operates.
