Abstract

539,936. Endless tracks for vehicles. ALLEY, S. E., and ALLEY, S. E. March 23, 1940, No. 5355. [Class 79 (i)] In an endless track comprising shoes 17 carried by the channel-shaped links 10 of a chain, the chain is not continuous but has one or more composite links each formed in two portions 22, 25 or 28, 31, each of these portions carrying one link pivot and being secured together by being attached to the same shoe. In the construction shown alternate links are composite. The shoes 17 are channel shaped with side flanges 18 and ground-engaging flanges 21, and are secured to the single links 10 by bolts 16 and to the composite links by bolts 36, 37. The link 10 is of channel shape with side flanges 11, 12 to which are welded bushes 13, 14 engaged by sprocket wheels 15. The composite links are also of channel shape with side flanges 23, 29 to which are welded pivot pins 38 passing through the bushes 13, 14. With the track thus formed, if any shoe is damaged or worn it can be readily replaced by removing the bolts by which it is connected to its chain link, and a chain link or a pivotal connection can similarly be replaced by removing the appropriate bolts without the troublesome operation of detaching the pivot pins.
