Abstract

539,428. Cathode-ray tubes. PULESTON, R., and WATTON, W. L. March 6, 1940, No. 4177. [Class 39 (i)] In luminescent screens as used in television receiving tubes wherein the fluorescent layer 1- is carried on a transparent support 2 through which the picture is viewed a light absorbing layer or coating 9 is applied to the support on the viewing side ; while reducing to some extent the light directly received by a viewer it reduces to a far greater extent any scattered rays. The coating may have the same refractive index as the support ; it may be of resinous material or a cellulose derivative or mixtures of the two incorporated with a plasticizer and may contain a dye or pigment such as carbon black. Instead of a layer the support 2 may be rendered light absorbing by including materials in the glass. Specifications 417,435 and 426,789 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the absorbing layer need not be arranged on the viewing side of the support.
