Abstract

1,154,500. Coloured glass composition. CHICAGO DIAL CO. 12 Dec., 1967 [12 Dec., 1966; 23 Oct., 1967], No. 56344/67. Heading ClM. [Also in Division H1] A cathode-ray tube having a fluorescent screen supporting on the inner surface a mixture of blue, green, and red colour-emitting phosphors is combined with an optical filter for viewing the screen, the filter comprising neutral glass modified by inclusion of 3-5% weight of a Nd compound, calculated as the oxide in a sheet of glass 1/ 8 inch thick. The filter has substantially higher relative green and red transmission and selective yellow absorption than a neutral-density glass filter, and the light from the screen therefore exhibits enhanced intensity in the green, red and blue, and overall enhanced contrast and brightness. An exemplified filter - glass composition is composed, in weight per cent, of: 5i0 2 , 65-75; Na 2 O, 12-19; CaO, 6-13; MgO, 1-4; A1 2 0 3 , 0À2-4; Nd 2 O 3 , 3-5. If the thickness of the sheet differs from # inch, the proportion of Nd 2 O 3 is varied so that the amount per unit area is constant. The filter may be formed by incorporation of the Nd in the face-plate of the tube.
