Abstract
539,303. Variable pitch propellers. MILLIGAN, W. J. H. March 8, 1940, No. 4351. [Class 114] In a variable pitch propeller each rotatable blade 2 has a cylindrical recess 5 formed in its root portion to accommodate a piston 6 or the like which is hydraulically operated in both directions and is connected by interfitting splines 7 to the hub 1 or to a member 3 secured thereto, and to the blade by means of helical grooves, whereby axial movement of the piston is converted into rotary movement of the blade. In the form shown, a quick-pitch thread 8 on the piston 6 meshes with a corresponding thread 9 on a core 10 secured to the blade 2. The piston 6 has a transverse partition 11 to form a pair of chambers 12, 13 which are made fluidtight by means of packing, and to and from both of which pressure fluid is supplied and withdrawn by conduits 14, 15 leading from common supply conduits 17, 16 respectively. The change in pitch may be synchronized, and made equal for all the blades, by means of a gear 18 on each blade meshing with a main gear 19.
