Abstract
528,017. Drilling-machines. HOLMAN BROS., Ltd., and ARTHUR, J. April 26, 1939, No. 12511. [Class 83 (iii)] Rotary rock drills, particularly those using hollow diamond drills, have the drill rod mounted in a sleeve concentric with the motor and withdrawable through the rear end of the motor spindle. The rotor 5 of the motor shown as a fluid pressure motor with vanes 5a runs in the casing 3 on ball bearings 6 and roller bearings 7 and is splined at 9b to a sleeve 9 running in taper roller bearings 10, 11 and fitted with packing washers 20. The drill rod 16 has a screwed connection at 17 with a rod 8 splined to the sleeve 9 at 9c and held in place by a nut 12 held captive by a nut 13. A water chamber 18 packed at 19 communicates at 9d and 8d with the interior of the drill rod. By unscrewing the nut 12 the drill rod may be withdrawn through the sleeve 9.
