Abstract

630,049. Well boring equipment. STEVENS, A. H. (Snyder Oil Tool Corporation). Aug. 20, 1947, No. 23072. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 20, 1947.] [Class 85] A rotary impact drill has secured to a bit 17a cam 28 engaging another cam 31 secured to a perforated sleeve capable of freely rotating about a continuously rotating drill stem 11. Rotation of this sleeve is impeded by vanes 37 projecting into the drilling fluid 19 so that differential rotation occurs between the two cams so that the tube 36 rises to drop suddenly so imparting a blow to the bit. The vanes may be either continuous or interrupted vertical strips, right or left helices or rows of rods. The upper cam can be spring - biassed and the sleeve 37 secured to the lower cam which is free to rotate, the upper cam having a splined connection with the drill stem. Rubber or metal bushes secured either to the drill stem or the sleeve 36 position the upper end of the sleeve.
