[Class 52 (ii)] A bedstead is provided with a back-rest a, a cross bar d capable both of rotation and axial movement by means of a knob i, an arm or arms e secured to the cross bar d and pivotally connected to cross pieces f on the rest frame, and means for locking the cross bar d in any of a number of predetermined angular positions according to the required inclination of the backrest. When out of use, the back-rest assumes the vertical position shown by full lines, the lower end being retained by hooks t on the uprights b of the bedstead. To bring the rest into use, a pivoted abutment u is swung aside to permit the cross bar d to be moved axially to the left as viewed in Fig. 1. This movement releases an apertured collar o carried by the cross bar from engagement with a pin on the supporting bracket. The cross bar together with the arms e may now be rotated to the desired extent and locked in the adjusted position by re-engagement of the pin with one of the apertures in the collar o, the lower end of the back rest a having been swung forward as indicated by broken lines. To remove the back rest from the bedstead, the knob i is detached and the right-hand end of the cross bar is removed laterally through a slot in its supporting bracket after first displacing a retaining sleeve k. The other end of the cross bar is then disengaged by an axial movement to the right, Fig. 1. In a modification, the upper portion of the back-rest is provided with a telescopic extension.
