Abstract

538,624. Sponge rubber. SCHIDROWITZ, P., and UNGAR. R. M. Feb. 8. 1940, No. 2428. [Class 70] Sponge or cellular rubber is made directly from aqueous rubber dispersions such as rubber latex by incorporating as an oxygen-generator to promote pore-formation, an organic compound or derivative of hydrogen peroxide, e.g. urea peroxide, which may be added as such, or as urea and concentrated hydrogen peroxide. There may be 4-8 parts of urea peroxide to 60 of dispersed rubber, e.g. as centrifugally concentrated latex. Other additives may include 2 to 6 parts of 50 per cent. magnesium hydrate aqueous gel as a setting agent, per 100 of rubber dispersion, 1 to 2 per cent of mineral oil, e.g. together with a little ammonia and casein to increase pore-dimensions, or glycerol to reduce pore-dimensions, sulphur or sulphur-generators, accelerators, activators, wetting-agents, stabilizers, anti-oxidants, pigments, dyes &c. Examples include zinc oxide, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate &c. The mixture may be stirred, poured into a mould allowing escape of excess gas, heated, e.g. for 15 minutes at 100‹C. in an air oven, removed from the mould, heated in boiling water to complete vulcanization, cooled in water, squeezed to remove extraneous moisture and dried.
