Abstract

A frothed rubber latex sponge contains frothed scrap rubber latex particles of at least 32 mesh, the amount added being between 1 and 40 per cent by weight. The term "rubber latex" includes synthetic latices, e.g. polychloroprene, butadiene-styrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, and mixtures thereof. The usual stabilizers, thickeners, anti-oxidants, accelerators are added and modifiers, e.g. castor oil to improve elasticity; carbon blacks as loaders; magnesium oxide and calcium silicate as stiffeners; paraffin wax to improve its fire resistance; and various dyes may also be added. In an example the natural rubber has potassium oleate and rosinate added, followed by a synthetic latex of butadiene-styrene containing ethyl zimate, paraffin wax coated zinc mercaptobenzothiazole and an emulsion of paraffin wax. The mix is matured at 100 DEG F. and then sym. di-b -naphthalene-p-phenylenediamine, an aqueous dispersion of carbon black and potassium oleate are added and the whole stirred. Scrap sponge is added and the mixture frothed, followed by the addition of zinc oxide, diphenyl guanidine, and sodium silicofluoride.ALSO:A frothed rubber latex sponge contains frothed scrap rubber latex particles of at least 32 mesh. The amount of scrap added is between 1 and 40 per cent by weight. Rubber latex includes natural and synthetic latices. Stabilizing agents, e.g. ammonia, alkali metal hydroxides, potassium oleate, rosin soaps, sodium stearate, potassium lauryl sulphate, sulphonated hydrocarbons, and sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphate; thickeners, e.g. casein, gum tragacanth and water glass; antioxidants, e.g. phenyl b -naphthylamine, di-b -naphthyl-p-phenylene diamine and the heptyl-diphenylamines; accelerators, e.g. zinc mercaptobenzothiazole, benzothiazyl disulphide, zinc diethyldithiocarbamate and tetramethyl-thiuram disulphide are specified, and, in addition, modifiers may be added, e.g. castor oil-to improve elasticity; carbon blacks-bonding agents; paraffin wax-improves the " snap " and fire resistance; dyes and colours-to improve appearance; and magnesium oxide and calcium silicate as stiffeners.
