Abstract
538,561. Raising submerged vessels. LLOBERA, M., and MONTANE, J. Dec. 5, 1939, No. 31490. [Class 68 (ii)] The male member of an automatic coupling suitable for use in raising sunken vessels comprises a rod 1 with a conical head 2 hollowed beneath and of larger diameter than the body, while the female member comprises a box 21 carrying radially pivoted arms 22 with hooked free ends 28, these arms being biassed to a closed position by a spring 26 acting on inward projections 23 provided on the arms and engaging the box 21 to limit the closing movement. A float chamber released from the vessel contains a drum from which a cable 8 attached to the male coupling is un-' wound as the chamber rises, a brake being released by a float, and the speed of the drum being governed by a paddle wheel. The brake is reapplied when the float chamber reaches the surface. The cable 8 is then severed and passed through the female coupling which is then lowered along the cable to engage the male member.
