[Class 83 (iv)] A sheet metal forming machine, particularly for flanging curved sheets or strips, comprises rollers or blades 6, 7, between which the sheet 10 is held and progressively fed, on angularly adjustable carriage 15 supporting a pneumatic hammer 14 or hydraulic former, and means for adjusting the carriage through an arc described about the forming centre so as to vary the line of action of the tool while the work is being fed through the holders. The adjustable block 7 is operated by a screw 9 against the action of a spring 8 &c. The table 11 is slotted at 12 for the passage of the pneumatic hammer 14 and carriage, the carriage having projections engaging curved guide grooves in members located beneath the table. The carriage has a toothed quadrant 16 and is angularly adjusted by a pinion connected by bevel gears to a hand operated shaft 21. The head 141 of the hammer is prevented 'from rotation and limited in its throw by an anchor guide 142 fixed to the member 143 and engaging a longitudinal groove 144 or projections on the head. The upper block 7 projects slightly beyond the lower block and the hammer is first positioned with the cut away portion 145 vertical so as to permit the head striking the part of the work immediately below the projecting lower edge of the block 7, which acts as an anvil. The work is fed by hand or mechanically past the hammer until its whole length is operated on. The hand wheel 25 is then adjusted so that the hammer moves in a direction nearer the horizontal and the process repeated. Finally the hammer is adjusted to a direction normal to the side face of the block 7 to complete the flange 101.
