[Class 83 (iv) ] An apparatus for flanging plates, particularly of non-circular shape, comprises a plate clamp, a template and an arm arranged swung with a variable radius about an axis substantially secured to the flange of the plate and carrying a tool which is pressed against the plate. The plate e is held between shaped blocks d, f and is flanged against the surface of the block f by a tool u carried by an arm p which is swung about a pillar b, the rear end of the arm being bifurcated so as to engage a peripheral groove in the pillar formed by flanges or collars n thereon so as to vary the effective radius of the arm. The tool is held against the work by a spring or weight r connected to the arm p by a cord q passing through the pillar. The block f is secured by a bar h through a nut m the rear end of the bar being supported by a ledge k on the pillar. This block has a peripheral rib g engaging a roller x, on the arm, the rib being of variable width so that its effective width is substantially constant for all angular positions of the arm. The arm has a guide pin y engaging the inner face of the rib. The pivot pin t of the tool u is carried by an eccentric bush w so as to adjust the tool preliminarily according to the thickness of the plate between each pass of the arm p the tool is adjusted by a screw v so as to draw it upwards until the projecting margin of the plate is forced against the block f. If required the margin may be wide enough to be pressed down on the upper face of the block f to form a lip. The arm may engage a stop or buffer to prevent it jumping forward when it reaches the level of the top of the block f. The tool and weight action may be made reversible so as to co-operate with either face of the block f to enable channels or Z-sections to be made.
