[Class 78 (i)] A composite conveyer, for example for ovens used for baking biscuits, comprises a train of longitudinally flexible thin metal surface elements or sheets mounted to form an endless conveyer or oven sole. As shown, the steel sheets 12 are carried in overlapping manner by a pair of endless chains 10 travelling on chain wheels 11 and horizontal guide rails. The leading end of each sheet is secured to the chains by dead-eyes 13, the shanks 14 of which extend into ferrules 15 of the chains, or the chain links are provided with lugs to which the forward corners of the sheets are attached. Between the dead-eyes 13 the sheets 12 are guided and supported by additional dead-eyes 16, channel members, angle brackets, or turnbutton devices 21, Fig. 7. Additional support for the sheets may be provided between the chains by a guide rail or a series of rollers, or by cross-bars 17 on the back of the sheets. At the turning points of the oven, the sheets are guided and supported by drums 18 with grooves 19 for the bars 17. The trailing edge of each sheet may be positioned by supporting tongues 20, Fig. 9, or by slotted or channelled lugs or other means with respect to the head of the next sheet, or may rest on the head of the sheet, which may be recessed or bent so that the upper surfaces of adjacent sheets lie in the same plane. The leading edge may be stiffened by a rod or bar 22, Fig. 8, which may engage at its ends with a slot 24 in a socket member 23 having a shank 25 engaging the chain. In further modifications, (a) the sheets are guided on rails or the like and are driven by a single chain engaging lugs on the under side of the sheets ; (b) rollers are provided between the chain wheels 11, so that the sheets 12 may be removed and a wire mesh band placed around the rollers ; (c) steel sheets such as 12 are detachably secured to the meshes of a wire mesh band by clips, hooks or other means ; (d) the steel sheets are replaced by sheets of wire mesh reinforced by metal bars, angle irons &c.
