Abstract

536,868. Concentrating ores. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HELLYER, W. C., and RABONE, P. Nov. 14, 1940, No. 16493. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] The silica content of an iron oxide or manganese oxide ore is reduced by a process comprising grinding the ore with water or an aqueous solution, removing as by decantation most of the most finely divided material produced during grinding, drying the remaining solids, mixing the solids with water containing an agent such as a quaternary ammonium salt, particularly cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, and treating the mixture in a flotation machine. The flotation water is preferably made strongly alkaline with an alkali carbonate, bicarbonate, or hydrate, and the drying is preferably effected by heat. In some cases a small amount of a frothing agent such as pine oil may be added. Specifications 410,956 and 463,261 are referred to.
