536,691. Preventing corrosion. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI. Nov. 22, 1939, No. 30595. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1938. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Groups XXIV and V] A method of applying a protective sleeve of resilient vulcanized rubber to the water exposed portions of propeller shafts, the rubber sleeve being drawn on to and along the shaft, consists in assisting the operation of drawing the sleeve on to and along the shaft by injecting a fluid, e.g. water, under pressure into the interspace between the sleeve and the shaft, by means, for example, of a hollow needle inserted through the wall of the sleeve. The sleeve may be in sections joined by a lap joint or by a butt joint. As shown, the ends 2, 3, of sleeve portions on a shaft 1 abut and are covered by a butt strap 9. Rubber solution is inserted where indicated at 10, 11, 12, 13 and the joint is bound with two bandages 7, 8, of rubber tape separated by a binding of wire.
