Abstract
536,429. Electrostatic precipitation apparatus. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., BADGER, H. M., and BURNS, J. Nov. 24, 1939, No. 30677. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for the removal of particles suspended in gases, such as producer gas supplied to motor vehicles, comprises an ionizing chamber b in which the particles are charged and from which the gas passes to a separate chamber e containing a mass of filter material on which the charged particles are deposited. The ionizing chamber b is of cylindrical form with an axially disposed fine wire b<SP>1</SP> stretched between hooks b<SP>2</SP> mounted in fibre or other insulating discs b<SP>3</SP> and surrounded by porcelain tubes b<SP>4</SP>. High potential is supplied to the wire by means of a spark coil c the primary circuit of which may be interrupted by an electromagnetic vibrator or a rotary contact breaker such as that used for the vehicle engine. Alternatively, an alternating current generator driven from the engine shaft and supplying current through a transformer may be used. The filter comprises a mass e<SP>2</SP> of loosely packed steel wool, mounted on a grid e<SP>3</SP>, with a layer of sisal tow e<SP>4</SP> retained by a grid e<SP>5</SP> spaced from the upper side of the chamber by blocks e<SP>6</SP>. A baffle plate e<SP>1</SP> with graded apertures distributes the gas uniformly over the under surface of the filter.
