Abstract

535,958. Vices. ROBERTSON, J. W., and SWINDEN, C. G. H. Jan. 9, 1940, No. 499. [Class 61 (ii)] A vice of the kind wherein a half-nut 20 is moved into and out of engagement with the vice screw spindle 18 by positive cam action is provided with a screwthreaded portion 34 on the normally plain part of the screw spindle engaged by a nut 40 provided with a projection 42 engaging a slot 44 in the cam bar 24 having inclined ends 26, 28 engaging holes 30, 32 in the ends of the vice slide 12 so that the initial rotation of the screw spindle 18 moves the bar 24 to the left or to the right causing engagement or disengagement of the half-nut 20. After this initial movement nut 40 runs off the restricted threaded portion 34 and engages a plain portion 36, 38 on either side thereof, light springs 46, 50 being provided to assist re-engagement of the nut with the threaded portion. The bar 24 may be locked to hold the half-nut 20 in permanent engagement with the screw spindle 18 by a bar 56 mounted for transverse movement in the vice slide 12 and having a hooked end 60 adapted to engage the projection 42 of the nut 40.
