Abstract
535,363. Packing airscrews. HILLS & SONS, Ltd., F., and SYKES, N. Jan. 22, 1940, No. 1270. [Classes 18 and 94 (i)] A case for containing two or more airscrews comprises a number of radial parts c, d, e, Fig. 1, to receive the blades of the airscrews which are placed in the case with the hub of each screw directed inwards and located between two blades of the adjacent screw, means being provided for securing the screws in the case. The upper part c of the case is rectangular, and the adjacent sides of the parts d, e form obtuse angles with the part c, the case being strengthened at these angles to carry rings f, or other anchorages, for slinging-tackle. The parts d, e, have short end walls g which are perpendicular to a flat bottom or, preferably, to short walls h that provide a recessed clearance portion which may be arranged upon any raised part, of a transport vehicle for example. The case may be stood upright on the walls h or on the end of the part c, and a number of cases may be stacked in rows of alternate upright positions. Each airscrew hub A' is screwed within the case by a tubular wooden part i of hexagonal section. One portion of this is fixed in the case while another portion is bolted to it, the joint between the two portions being cut out to accommodate the roots of the blades. The blades may be secured by partitions k to which clamps k' are bolted. These partitions may have circular apertures in which circular spools l, Fig. 2, are clamped. Eaeh spool has a flange m to prevent axial movement and is divided diametrically to enable it to be fitted to the tips p of the blade. The spool is rotatable in the aperture before the clamp is tightened, and adapts itself to blades of different pitch.
