781,627. Composite wooden beams. ESSER, G. June 28, 1955, No. 18658/55. Class 20(4) A composite wooden beam comprises a plurality of dressed elongated elements of triangular or trapezoidal cross-section, each having two sides formed by substantially radial cuts in a tree-trunk, each pair of elements being glued or otherwise secured together along adjacent radially cut sides, the apices of adjacent elements being oppositely directed and the apex of at least one element of a pair of adjacent elements being spaced from the base of the other element. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of a tree trunk divided by radial cuts 2 to form triangular sections of varying sizes which may be dressed by transverse cuts 3. Transverse cuts 8 may be made to form elements 4 of trapezoidal cross-section and smaller triangular elements 5. As in Fig. 3, triangular elements 11 have dressed bases 14 with oppositely directed apices 13 each spaced from the base 14 of the other, the elements 11 being glued or otherwise secured along the radial sides 12. Other examples of possible arrangements of more than two elements are described, such as in Fig. 6 where a trapezoidal element 22 has secured to each side two triangular elements 23. 24, the smaller element 24 having its base 24b spaced from the apex 22a and its apex 24a coinciding with the base 22b of the element 22 and the larger element 23, having an arcuate base 23b spaced from the apex 22a and its apex 23a spaced from the base 22b. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 750,278.
