A method of manufacturing wooden articles consisting of a plurality of pieces jointed together comprises first sorting the pieces into groups selected with respect to the number of relative disposition of the defectfree faces of the lengths in such a manner that each group contains lengths having the same number of defect-free faces and then jointing together lengths belonging to one or different groups so that the finished article exhibits one or more defect-free outer surfaces. Fig. 1 shows one sorted group A consisting of three lengths 1, 2, 3 each having one defect-free side 4, 5, 6 which at stage I are all arranged uppermost and at stage II glued and/or rabbetted together to form a single block. At stage III, this block is sawn along planes 10, 11 to provide three units 12, 13, 14 each having at least two defect free sides as shown at stage IV. Other groups of pieces which are sorted at the same time as the group A have a different number or relative disposition of defect-free sides and are treated as for group A. Articles may be formed by selection from two or more of the groups. The pieces of each group are cut, originally from boards 59, Fig. 2, which have been sawn from a log 58, the corner pieces or wanes 60, 61 being themselves first trimmed to a triangular crosssection and then sorted and jointed together into a block, Fig. 4 (not shown) so that knot-free boards may be produced. The sorting of the lengths may be effected manually or partly or completely mechanically.
