Abstract
534,778. Thermionic valves. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. Nov. 8, 1939, No. 29671. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] In a rectifier or like device containing mercury vapour the vapour is supplied from mercury contained in a vessel outside the discharge space and separated therefrom by a porous or like partition such that the aggregate area of the passages in the partition is sufficient to allow the vapour to pass through with sufficient rapidity, but liquid mercury is excluded. The partition is preferably of sintered glass or ceramic material and is of such material that the time for the requisite amount of vapour to pass is greater than that necessary for heating up the tube, and of such size that even if the mercury is resting on it there is sufficient space for the passage of the vapour. The Figure shows a rectifier tube of glass sections 11 ... 16 and metal sections 6 ... 10. The section 16 has an extension 17 with a porous partition 19, behind which is the mercury 19. The anode 20 is of cylindrical form with openings 21 and a closed bottom to prevent solid matter from falling on to the partition 19. The temperatures may be 20-40 C and the pressure 1-6 microns. Specification 456,613 is referred to.
