[Class 52 (iv)] [Also in Group XI ] A firescreen which affords protection against falling embers and also serves to control or suppress combustion in domestic firegrates, comprises a fireproof curtain 24 mounted on a spring roller 23 arranged in a housing in front of the fireplace and adapted to be raised or lowered to suit requirements. The curtain may be placed close to the fireplace or spaced therefrom. An additional transparent curtain 48, which may be ornamented, mounted on a spring roller 47 may also be employed, when fires are not used. In applying the curtain to a fireplace of the kind shown, vertical adjustable rods 10 are secured between the hearth and upper part of the fireplace opening. The rods 10 carry brackets 15 and turnbuckles 17 are secured to the rods 10 and brackets 15 and acted on by springs 19, 20. The outer ends of the brackets 15 carry adjustable arms 16a provided with sockets 16 to receive pins 21 on side plates 22 which carry the spring roller 23. The curtain passes over guide rollers one 27 of which is mounted on arms 28 secured to the side plates 22 and tensioned by springs. The lower end of the curtain is provided with a metal strip 24a. The inner surface of the curtain is cleaned by brushes 31. When it is desired to lower the curtain in spaced relation to the fireplace, adjustable arms 33 are lowered to a position such as that shown in dotted lines and locked in position and the curtain is carried over a U-section bar 32 supported on the arms. The bar 32 has hinged thereto adjustable rods 38 which rest on the hearth when the curtain is in use and are folded up inside the bar 32 when not required for use.
