UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EIMER F. PIDGEON, OF SPICELAND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T LUTHER 0 DRAPER, 0F SPICELAND, INDIANA.
CCMBINED SHIELD AND BRACKET SUPPORT FOR DOUBLE SHADES.
Application filed March 10, 1927. Serial No 174,275.
This invention relates to double window shades of that type wherein the rollers are supported in close proximity between the upper and lower ends of the window frame, and
more particularly to the shields used in connection with shades of this type for the purpose of preventing light from passing through the gap .or space between the rollers thereof.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide a light excluding shield of the character stated which shall be of such angular formation in cross section as to extend into the gap or space between the shade rollers in a manner to positively exclude the direct en'- trance of light between the shade rollers and also to greatly reduce the entrance of reflected light.
Theinvention has for a further objectto providea lightexcluding shield of the character stated wherein the cross sectional formation thereof shall be such as not to interfere with the free operation of the shades and such as to add such strength and rigidity thereto as to permit of its being made of comaratively light sheet metal and utilized as a ase or support'for the shade roller brackets.
The invention has for a further object to provide a light excluding shield of the character stated which may be secured flat against the inner faces of the window frame or to and between the jambs of the window frame.
The invention has for a still further object to provide a light excluding shield, of the character stated which-shall be adjustable as to length so as to permit of its ready application to window frames of different widths.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the nature of which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1- is an elevational view of a window construction equipped with a double shade embodying a combined light excluding shield and shade bracket support,
' Figure 2 is a view in end elevation of the double shade and combined light excluding shield and shade bracket support, 7 v
Figure 3 is a sectional viewtaken on the horizontal plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1,
6.6 Figure 4 is a detail elevational view of the combined light excluding shield and shade bracket support, 7 I Figure 5 is an elevational view illustrating the application to a window construction of a slightly modified form of the combined light excluding shield and shade bracket support, f Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the horizontal plane indicated by the line 6 -6 of Figure 5, and V 1 Figure 7 isa sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line of Figure 5.
,Referring to the drawings, by reference characters, 1 designates the frame of a window construction which is shown as equipped with a double shade and a combined light exeluding shield and shade bracket support of which the latter is constructed in accordance with my invention. The lower shade, 2 is mounted on a roller 3 and provided with a pull cord 4. The upper shade 5 is mounted on a roller 6' and provided with a pull cord 7 which passes about a combined pulley and cord catch secured to the top of the window frame 1. The roller 3 is supported by brackets 9 and the roller 6 by brackets- 10, and said brackets are secured to the combined light excluding shield and support 11.
The shield and support 11 is made of sheet metal, and is of V-form in cross or vertical section. It is of greater length than the rollers 3 and 6, and is also of a length greater than the distance between the sides of the window frame 1. It is adapted to be'secured flat against the inner faces of the window frame 1, and extends inwardly from the window frame and into the gap between the rollers?) and 6. The lower and upper members 11 and 11 of the shield and support 11 are equal in width, An attaching flangell. extends downwardly from the lower edge of the member 11*, and-an attaching flange 11 extends upwardly from the upper edge ofthe member 11 The attaching flanges 11 and 11 which extend throughout the entire length of the shield and support 11, and which consist of two thicknesses of the metal from which the device is made, are arrangedin a vertical plane, and are provided with openings for the reception of the screws 12' 'The brackets 9 are secured to the ends of the member 11 by rivets 13, and the brackets 10 are secured to the ends'of the member 11" by rivets 14:. The bases of the brackets 9 andlO ' orattaching flanges 9 and 10 thereof, are 1.19
it ma positioned in contact with the outer faces of the members 11 and 11,and the rivets 13 and 14 engage said flanges and members.
. As shown in; Figures 5, 6 and 7, the shield and support, which here designated 15, may be made adjustable as to length so as to adapt it for application towindow frames of different Widths. This form of the device comprises telescopically associated sections 15 and 15 and may otherwise be constructed similar to the device shown in Figures 1%. If. desired this device may be provided at the ends thereof with attaching lugs or cars 16 to rmit of its application to and between the l ambs of the window frame 1; The ears or lugs 16 are arranged at right angles to and extend forwardly from the ends of the attaching flanges 15 and 15 of the device, and are provided with openings for the reception of fastenin elements such as the screws 17 When this device is not rovided with the ears or lugs 16, the attac ing flanges 15 and 15 thereof are provided with openings forthe reception of the fastening elements.
Due to its angular formation, the shield and support may be made of comparatively light metal and of suflicient rigidity and strength to prevent the bending or distortion thereof as the result of and during the adj ustment of the shades. The attaching flanges of the device add strength and rigidity thereto, and
ermit it to be secured flat against the inner aces of a window frame; As the device is of angular or V-form in cross or vertical section, and as it extends inwardly from the window frame and into the space between the shade rollers, it will positively exclude the entrance of light'between the shade rollers and reduce to the minimum the passage of reflected'lighthetween the shade rollers.
The device is simple, durable and eflicient,
be manufacturedand sold at a comparatively low cost, and it may be painted or enameledin any desired color. The brackets which are arranged atright angles to planes of the angular related members of the shield, are of such length that when the shade rollels are mounted thereon said memberswill project into the spacebetwee'n the rollers, and the vertical fiangesof the shield extend above the trunnionreceiving openings of the'brackets, whereby to effect the exclusion ofthe light as stated. V It should be understood that the drawings are merely illustrative and do notprctend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawings are illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scapfilof my invention. p
