Abstract

532,469. Mechanical presses. WOODHEAD & SONS, Ltd., J., and SANDERS, T. H. July 31, 1939, No. 22115. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIX, XXII and XXVI] A hydraulic, fluid-pressure, or other power press is constructed with a reaction member 6 which is shown mounted between two hydraulic rams 9, the member 6 being mounted loosely in the machine substantially perpendicular to the direction of motion of the rams. Dies 10 for use in assembling laminated springs are arranged between the members 6, 9. The reaction member 6 is supported by a pin 8 resting on struts 5 which connect the frame members 2, and is constrained by pins 7 on bars 4 connected to the frame members 2. The reaction member acts on the lever principle, and the members 4, 5 act in part in compression and in part in tension. The rams 9 are returned by shackles 11 and blade springs 12. In Fig. 4 which shows the invention applied to a machine as in Specification 490,636, [Group XXII], for performing a number of press operations, the turret 13 is carried by a reaction member 6, and this member and the cylinder block 2 are each inserted between pins 7a on a pair of vertical bars 4a, and are connected by an adjustable strut 5a, formed of two parts connected by a wedge 17. The ram 9 is returned by a spring 18 and shackles 19.
