Abstract

532,360. Films &c. KALLE & CO., AKT.-GES. Aug. 26, 1939, No. 24597. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] A highly viscous pasty solution of cellulose e.g. a solution in zinc chloride, sulphuric acid, or phosphoric acid, is extruded through a slot so as to form a foil or band, and to facilitate the extrusion the solution is heated superficially while it passes through the extrusion slot. Preferably the cellulosic solution is supplied to the'extrusion device at a low temperature e.g. 10‹C. The lips of the extrusion device may be heated to a temperature of 30‹-150‹C. or, in the case of high speed extrusion, they may be at 200-300‹C. In an example, a solution of cellulose in sulphuric acid of 60.3-65 per cent strength at 0‹-10‹C. and containing 7-8 per cent of cellulose is extruded under pressure through the slot of an extrusion device, the lips of which are heated by warm water to a temperature of 35‹-40‹C. The rate of extrusion is such that the film-forming mass is only superficially heated. The mass issues into a coagulating bath containing dilute sulphuric acid or strong ammonium sulphate solution at a temperature below 10‹C. A smooth surface film of good tensile strength is obtained.
