Abstract
532,327. Road making and repairing apparatus. JOHNSTON BROS. (CONTRACTORS), Ltd., and HOBBS, J. E. July 20, 1939, No. 21107. [Class 107] Apparatus for making and repairing roads comprises a wheeled device for movement over the road surface, a levelling device disposed transversely of the carriage and adapted to be reciprocated lengthwise thereon, and a heating device placed just in front of the levelling device to heat and soften a bituminous surface in preparation for the levelling. Road-treating blades such as 17 are disposed at opposite inclinations across the vehicle on a carrier 11 which is adjustable for height by means of screw devices 18, as described in Specification 426,000. The blades are reciprocated transversely through chain gearing 25 driven from the back shaft as the vehicle moves along, as described in Specification 422,842. Disposed in front of the blades is a burner 30 with a fixed hood 32 and a verticallyadjustable rim 33, and the hood may be shaped to fit in the space between the blades where they cross. Further heaters may be disposed in the space between the blades at the rear of the front blade, and the vertically-disposed blades may be replaced by horizontally-disposed rakes.
