Abstract
422,842. Road-surface levelling machines. JOHNSTON, J. T. M., 35, Crutched Friars, London. June 20, 1933, No. 17604. [Class 107] Relates to apparatus for planing or trimming off irregularities of road surfaces, or for distributing newly deposited material thereover. According to the invention, the apparatus comprises one or more blades 13, arranged in bearings transversely of a vehicle 10, and means are provided for imparting a lengthwise oscillating movement to each blade as the vehicle moves along. In the construction shown, the blade is carried by brackets 12 provided with rollers 15, 16, engaging respectively with the upper surface of the blade and the lower face of a bracket secured thereto. The blade is reinforced throughout its length by anglesection girders 14, and near its centre by a pair of angle-section girders 20, the latter forming a channel which houses a block 21. This block is connected by a crank 22 to an eccentric pin 23 of a bevel wheel 24 which is driven through gearing 26..29 by the rear axle 30 of the vehicle. The axle is secured to one or both of the road wheels 11 and may be coupled to the sprocket wheel 29 by a clutch 31. The thrust on the blade is taken by two rollers 18. The blade may be flat or of curved cross-section and may be mounted with its face inclined to the vertical such that the lower edge is in front of the upper edge. In a modification, the face of the blade is horizontal and the front edge thereof is serrated and lies close to the lower forward part of a fixed rake or serrated blade which is secured to the vehicle. In another arrangement, two rakes are provided, one in front of and the other behind the reciprocating blade. In all constructions, the blade may be raised or lowered by mounting the brackets 12 on a frame which is vertically adjustable on the vehicle frame. Specification 1564/07, [Class 107], is referred to.
