Abstract
712,477. Repairing road surfaces. JOHNSTON BROS. (CONTRACTORS), Ltd., and FORSDYKE, P. J. Jan. 3, 1951 [Jan. 3, 1950], No. 153/50. Class 107 Worn or uneven road surfaces containing tar, bitumen or like thermoplastic binders are repaired by mechanically scraping off or planing off the uneven surface, gathering up and lifting the loosened material from the road surface and applying heat to the loosened material before and/or during lifting, in such a manner that the binder is soft during lifting and collecting, and depositing the lifted material away from the road surface. Preferably the loosened material is gathered up immediately it has been scraped or planed off, and the necessary apparatus may be carried by a single vehicle or a pair of vehicles. In the form shown, a planing machine 10 of the type described in Specifications 422,842 and 426,000 deposits loosened material in a heap 11 extending substantially centrally along the road 12 and carries a central scoop 14 and a pair of pivotally mounted channel-section trays 15, 17 along which passes a chain 24 fitted with blades 25 and passing over sprocket wheels 20, 21, 22, 23, the sprocket wheel 22 being driven by a power unit 31 or by the engine of the machine 10. When not in use, the scoop 14 and tray 17 may be folded away by adjustable linkages 26, 27, and when in use, the undersides of the scoop 14 and tray 15 are heated by a blow-pipe 33 fed from a reservoir 34. The material may fall into a lorry 37 or into a hopper pivotally mounted on the tray 17, provided with a sideways or fore-and-aft discharge, and with or without means for heating it. As a modification, the scoop 14 may be mounted on wheels or skids which may be vertically adjustable.
