Rotary-tool machines; adjusting parts of travelling and propelling gear. -A motor-driven soilcrumbling machine comprises two oppositely rotated drums carrying knives which are projected and retracted as the drums rotate. The drums may be driven by separate motors or by the same motor, and ground wheels may be provided at their ends. The knives of one drum may be more numerous, may project further, or may be driven more rapidly than the others to cause the machine to travel. The knives 3, 4 are pivoted on rings 11 in slotted drums 10 and are held against eccentrics or cams 14 by springs 13. The eccentrics or cams 14 are mounted on straight or cranked shafts adapted to be partially rotated to adjust the eccentrics. The arrangement may be such as to cause the knifes to be projected slowly and retracted quickly. The knives may be arranged in spiral lines. In a modification the knives are pivoted on discs carried by a hollow shaft surrounding the shaft carrying the eccentrics and having openings through which extend projections on the knives. In another modification several spring-controlled knives are arranged in the same plane and are adjusted by cams rotating with the drum. When travelling on roads all these knives are retracted within the drum, but when cultivating all the knives are projected, those engaging the soil being automatically drawn deeper into it by the forward movement of the machine. The drums may be subdivided as shown in Fig. 14, the knives of each half being separately controlled for steering purposes. The main frame may consist of two parts pivoted together as shown.
