Abstract

532,224. Cellulose ester compositions. COUNTY CHEMICAL CO., Ltd., and HAMBREKS, L. G. Aug. 23, 1939, No. 24223. [Class 2 (ii)] In the production of cellulose acetate paints or coating or adhesive compositions, the cellulose acetate is damped with methylated spirit and dissolved in a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and methylene chloride so as to form a smooth liquid jelly. The jelly is suitable for use as a transparent adhesive cement for aeromodels and like purposes. Aluminium powder may be added for making a metallic paint. Dyes or pigments may be added for making coloured lacquers. For aeroplane dope, sufficient butyl alcohol and triphenyl phosphate may be added. Cellulose acetate may be damped with 64 o.p. methylated spirit. The mixture is stirred during the addition until the spirit has been absorbed. It is then stirred with a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and methylene chloride. Camphor and triphenyl phosphate are added and the resultant liquid is allowed to stand until a clear jelly is produced. Aluminium powder and further quantities of carbon tetrachloride or methylene chloride and methylated spirit may be added to this base to form a metallic paint. Swedish wood pulp may be added to the base to produce a cement for balsa wood. Amyl acetate may be added to the base to form an adhesive glue for aeroplanes. A coloured lacquer may be obtained by adding butyl alcohol, amyl acetate, and pigment to the base composition.
