Abstract

531,892. Submarine vessels. GORDON, C. J. June 12, 1939, Nos. 17128/39 and 8793/40. [Class 113 (ii)] Small size submarines which may be carried by a parent-vessel are provided with a primary battery 8 of cells having negative elements of magnesium and serve to provide motive power for the vessel. This arrangement affords the advantage that a reserve stock of magnesium elements can be carried in the vessel to renew the elements of the primary battery when they are exhausted whilst sea water serves as electrolyte. The batteries are connected up to direct current motors driving the propellers. A secondary battery for which the primary battery serves as trickle charger is switched on when a higher speed is required. The hull is double skinned and the compartments 8 so formed and main ballast tanks may be flooded or emptied by connecting up the compartments to a reversable blower. Specifications 423,301, 423,353, 423,738, 437,821, 441,894, 443,983 and 526,601, [all in Group XXXVI], are referred to.
