Abstract
531,172. Boiler furnaces. SATCHWELL, L. March 28, 1939, No. 9736. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] A boiler has below the opening of a fuel hopper 5 an imperforate bridge member 12 dividing the falling fuel into two opposing piles resting on the boiler floor, and primary air for combustion admitted at 16 laterally beneath the member 12 passes out through the inwardly sloping fuel faces 18, 19 formed by the natural angle of repose of the fuel. The floor may have a central ash-pit 22 into which the fuel does not overflow. The hopper has a water jacket 7 connected at each end to the boiler water space. The bridge member 12 is of inverted V form with its surfaces inclined at substantially the angle of repose of the fuel. The boiler is of steel plates 1, 2 welded and braced by stays 4, 8. The primary and secondary air inlets 16, 17 are controlled by a thermostat 25 operating flaps. Cold water enters at 20 and hot water is withdrawn at 21. The flue 33 has a counterbalanced flap.
