Abstract

530,254. Linkwork. HARLEY, M. C. June 2, 1939, No. 16236. [Class 80 (iii)] To overcome difficulties due to backlash, stretch in cables, expansion and lubrication, power is transmitted by mechanism comprising a straight tubular openended member 1 provided at its ends with split caps 2 each adapted to carry a sprocket 3 with hollow axle 4 mounted in ball or roller bearings. The sprockets are connected by a continuous loop made up of two equal lengths of chain 8, 9, each of sufficient length to transmit a rotation of 90 degrees to 180 degrees, two stranded cables 6, 7 and a strong coil spring 10. The loop, when placed over the sprockets, is under considerable tension, much greater than that due to the actuation, to obviate backlash &c. The member 1 may comprise parallel ducts for the runs of the loop. A line of such units may be made up by causing the serrated ends of the axles 4 to project from the sides of the caps 2 to engage similar ends on other units, the units being clamped together by bolts passing through bores 12 in the axles. In modifications, (1) the member 1 may be cylindrical and the caps 2 rotatable thereon, (2) more than one spring may be used, (3) the sprockets may be forced apart by spring means and (4) the sprockets may be of different sizes.
