Abstract

529,850. Speedometer. ELMS, R. May 31, 1939, No. 16036. [Class 106 (iii)] Apparatus for indicating the mileage that should have been travelled by a vehicle if a constant pre-determined speed were maintained comprises indicating means driven through positive variable gearing from a clock. The minute hand of the latter has an extension 6 carrying pinions 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, 9e, and 9f. A spindle 10 carrying a pointer 14 which indicates the desired mileage is driven by a gear 19 which slides thereon together with a rocking frame 17 carrying a gear 23. A knob 32 operating through a rack and pinion 31 and a lever 29 causes the gear 23 to connect gear 19 to any desired pinion of the 9a &c. group. The lever 29 co-operates with a toothed gate to ensure that gear 23 engages only with each separate pinion. A pointer 44 driven from knob 32 indicates the pre-determined speed the apparatus has been set for. The apparatus is also provided with a pointer 65 indicating true mileage which is operated by a vehicle driven shaft through a train of worm gears. This drive incorporates a friction clutch which enables the pointer 65 to be zeroized when desired. A pointer 81 shows the number of complete turns of the pointer 14 by gearing from the spindle 10.
